چکیده

We present quantitative statistical evidence for a γ-ray emission halo surrounding the Galaxy. Maps of the emission are derived. EGRET data were analyzed in a waveletbased non-parametric hypothesis testing framework, using a model of expected diffuse (Galactic + isotropic) emission as a null hypothesis. The results show a statistically significant large scale halo surrounding the center of the Milky Way as seen from Earth. The halo flux at high latitudes is somewhat smaller than the isotropic γ-ray flux at the same energy, though of the same order (O(10–10) ph cm s sr above 1 GeV).

If a substantial fraction of the observed γ-ray bursts originates within an extended Galactic halo then their spatial distribution should deviate slightly from spherical symmetry in a very particular way which involves features both in the bursts' angular and radial distributions. This conclusion is based on various reasons which are all related to the presence and motion of the satellite galax...

Gamma Ray Astronomy and Baryonic Dark Matter

Recently, Dixon et al. (1998) have re-analyzed the EGRET data, finding a statistically significant diffuse γ-ray emission from the galactic halo. We show that this emission can naturally be explained within a previously-proposed model for baryonic dark matter, in which γ-rays are produced through the interaction of high-energy cosmic-ray protons with cold H2 clouds clumped into dark clusters th...

The Galactic contribution to high latitude diffuse γ-ray emission

Recent evidence for a large Galactic halo, based on cosmic-ray radioactive nuclei, implies a significant contribution from inverse Compton emission at high Galactic latitudes. We present predictions for the expected intensity distribution, and show that the EGRET gamma-ray latitude distribution is well reproduced from the plane to the poles. We show that the Galactic component at high latitudes...

A re-analysis of EGRET data by Dixon et al. [1] has led to the discovery of a statistically significant diffuse γ-ray emission from the galactic halo. We show that this emission can naturally be accounted for within a previously-proposed model for baryonic dark matter, according to which dark clusters of brown dwarfs and cold selfgravitatingH2 clouds populate the outer galactic halo and can sho...

Gamma-Ray Bursts from High Velocity Neutron Stars

We investigate the viability of the Galactic halo model of γ-ray bursts by calculating the spatial distribution of neutron stars born with high velocities in the Galactic disk, and comparing the resulting brightness and angular distribution with the BATSE data. We find that the Galactic halo model can reproduce the BATSE peak flux and angular distribution data for neutron star kick velocities >...
